Not About The Buildings presents Say Goodbye To Winter at The Dead-In! @ Ada Books - Monday, March 16th, 2009

Say Goodbye To Winter at The Dead-In!

Join us in bidding a not-so-fond farewell to winter with an out-loud reading of James Joyce's "The Dead." Originally published in 1914, the final tale in Joyce's Dubliners has been called the greatest short story of the twentieth century. Written a decade before Ireland began fighting for its independence, the story deals with patriotism, marriage, race, secrecy, music, festivity, class and snow!

This chilly story is a perfect way to say goodbye (hopefully) to winter. And what better way to get ready for Saint Patrick's Day than a reading by Ireland's most famous writer?

At fifty pages or so, this isn't quite a marathon reading (though there will be time for eighteen people to read aloud.) Think of it more as a literary 5K. Last year's winter-ending Frome-In was one of our most successful events, despite the fact that most people seem to really hate Ethan Frome. We think the Dead-In will be even more exciting!

The event takes place on St. Patrick's Eve, March 16th, at Ada Books, 717 Westminster St (on the west side, near Classical High School). The fun starts at 7pm. Suitably Irish refreshments will be served.

Money and Maids, Rapture and Raisins

This weekend is your last opportunity to see Meg Miroshnik's Bad Money at Perishable Theatre
(my review is here) and the Brown/Trinity Consortium's production of Jean Genet's The Maids at the Pell Chaffee Performance Center, right next door . Just because these shows are currently neighbors on Union Street doesn't mean they have anything in common: it's difficult to imagine them in conversation, unfair to arrange them as though in debate, and probably unproductive to challenge them with the same questions. Bad Money is good-hearted and inquisitive; its heroine, Agnetta, returns to her Eastern European motherland to make some money in its post-political wilderness. It's a funny show, and gently unsettling. The Maids is about power: two maids, sisters Claire and Solange, plot a ritual of revenge against Madame, the mistress of the house, but have too thoroughly absorbed the script of their own subservience to really murder her. It is brought to the stage by director Mia Rovegno, in whose hands it bleats sadly and stubbornly. Ah! What crass summary! Why bother? Go to both shows this weekend not to compare and contrast but to see two sides of a vast, polyhedral art.

Also, since we're all indie now, check out Trinity Rep's The Secret Rapture, a minutely observed family and social drama, and A Raisin in the Sun, which glows with a kind of moral certainty.
