Call for Artist Proposals: The Hive Archive (The Hive) seeks Art and Art Installations Proposals for The Hive's Work by Women Billboard

The Hive is a women-run feminist arts organization with a mission to promote gender equality by dismantling obstacles that limit women and girls in reaching their full creative potential. Our work is focused on empowerment through art, creative expression, and civic involvement.

A panel of five women leaders who live and work in Olneyville will select four artists. Each artist will be displayed on the billboard for a period of two months throughout October 2009-June 2010. The billboard is on the exterior of The Hive building (150 Manton Ave) and positioned directly above the entrance on the corner of Manton Ave and Aleppo St.

The Hive is the gateway to the recently-transformed Riverside section of Olneyville, including the new nine-acre Riverside Park and Woonasquatucket Bike Path. The Work by Women Billboard will be a celebration of women in the arts and foster a sense of pride and spirit in Olneyville – it will be seen by thousands of drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists each day.

Thanks to generous support from the Rhode Island State Council on the Arts, each Work by Women Billboard artist will receive a $200 stipend.

SubText: a feminist arts salon - Wednesday, August 12th

SubText (a feminist arts salon)

Join us for the inaugural meeting of SubText: a feminist art salon, facilitated by artist Anna Shapiro and sponsored by The Hive Archive.

SubText will be gathering on a monthly basis to discuss feminist texts (literary and visual), and mining the history of feminism, and locating meaningful directions within the multiple waves of feminism. Our motive is to gather and share resource information, wrestle with the theories, and grabble with attempts to post feminize. At each meeting we will refer to a writing, a painting, or a political action as the seed for discussion. SubText is free and all are welcome to participate.

This week:

Anna Shapiro will be referring to articles One is Not Born a Woman, a provocative essay about gender by 80 year old Monique Wittig, and An Ironic Dream of a Common Language for Women in the Integrated Circuit, about cyborgs and the nature culture split dominant in western patriarchal systems by Donna Harraway.

7-9pm/ Free
135 Mauran Ave, East Providence

A Victory for Burnside?

A belated thank you to those of you who joined us last month for the 2nd Annual IndieArts Fest. With the help of over fifty arts vendors, about thirty musical acts, and a good deal of beer, we transformed Burnside Park and the Bank of America Skating Center into a smorgasbord of entertainment. Headliners Chinese Stars, Ty Jesso & Go-Go-Power, and Designer Drugs wrapped up a day of musical acts armed with everything from banjos to ray guns. (Seriously, I think Swiss Chemistry Club had a ray gun!)

Whether you brought your skateboards or your sideburns, we hope you enjoyed yourself as thoroughly as we enjoyed United BBQ's seitan. Thanks for celebrating the local arts with Ambrose and us --

And please remember, it's never too early to start grooming those whiskers for a victory next year.

Human Trafficking: The Problem of “Morality”

© United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute. The image is taken from a television spot that aired on Italian television during the period 2002–2004 to raise awareness about human trafficking originating from Nigeria.

Human trafficking is a hot topic here in Rhode Island. Due to the state’s controversial legal loophole that (at least for the time being) permits the indoor solicitation of prostitution, a lot of anti-prostitution advocates (including Providence College’s own Donna Hughes) have argued that this strange quirk actually fuels human trafficking into our state. I would argue instead that the complete criminalization of prostitution simply drives the phenomenon further underground, making it harder to prosecute traffickers and locate trafficked persons who are forced into prostitution.* **

The term “human trafficking” is a hugely loaded term, and before launching in to the trafficking-prostitution quagmire in future posts I wanted to take a moment to deconstruct the problematic language that is popularly used on all sides of the trafficking debate. Each official definition of human trafficking emphasizes a different aspect of the phenomenon and, as a result, has different implications for the types of policies used to combat human trafficking. It would be an oversimplification to provide one overarching definition of human trafficking. Nonetheless, because the United Nations has provided the most widely recognized definition of human trafficking, the definition of trafficking provided in the 2000 UN Protocol to Prevent, Punish, and Suppress Trafficking in Persons can be used as a starting point for explaining human trafficking:

“Trafficking in persons” shall mean the recruitment, transportation, transfer, harbouring or receipt of persons, by means of the threat or use of force or other forms of coercion, of abduction, of fraud, of deception, of the abuse of power or of a position of vulnerability or of the giving or receiving of payments or benefits to achieve the consent of a person having control over another person, for the purpose of exploitation. Exploitation shall include, at a minimum, the exploitation of the prostitution of others or other forms of sexual exploitation, forced labour or services, slavery or practices similar to slavery, servitude or the removal of organs…

Some scholars have suggested that human trafficking should be understood within the context of transnational labor and labor exploitation. I think that the use of the term human trafficking itself is highly problematic, and that this phenomenon should be reframed and renamed entirely. The term human trafficking has several inherent connotations, each of which are highly problematic in practice.

· First, human trafficking suggests that humans can be reduced to objects and shipped across borders like commodities. This strips individuals of their agency and ignores the larger complexity of this phenomenon. In most cases of trafficking, individuals are not kidnapped and shipped across international borders. Rather, community members in the sending country who promise employment opportunities in a foreign country recruit migrants. However, upon arrival, these migrants are trapped in exploitative labor relationships and deprived of their immigration documents.

· Second, the term human trafficking is close to the language used to describe drug trafficking and weapons trafficking. The similarity in the terminology used to explain these phenomena suggests that human trafficking is a law enforcement problem that can be addressed through stricter policing. As several interviewees noted, however, criminal law mechanisms for dealing with the phenomenon can be counter-productive.

I suggest that the term human trafficking should be abandoned altogether. Instead of placing human trafficking in its own category, policymakers, law enforcement officials, and social workers should focus on labor exploitation and working conditions. This is already the lens adopted by international organizations such as the International Labor Organization. Situating human trafficking within its own unique category of analysis is problematic because law makers use this privileged status to focus on cases of sexual exploitation and prostitution, while ignoring other forms of labor exploitation.

In addition, the term “human trafficking” is weighted down by all sorts of moralistic baggage, connoting images of female prostitution and criminal trafficking rings. The term is a throwback to the “white slave traffic” debates of the late nineteenth century and early twentieth century, when Westerners expressed (generally unsubstantiated) fears that defenseless (White) women were being kidnapped and forced into prostitution by (dark-skinned) immigrant men in an unstoppable epidemic of sexual exploitation. Since its inception, the trafficking debate has dripped with ideas about female morality and xenophobia.

The biggest problem with the morality rhetoric, though, is that it doesn’t lend itself to any clear policy solutions. The only way to deal with a crisis of morality is to ask individuals to change their values—not very feasible on a political level. By framing this problem with the context of labor exploitation, we can come up with feasible, specific policy solutions to combat the horrendous problem of labor exploitation.

*****************************************
Get out of the summer heat and check out The Fledgling Festival as it enters its fifth season and its fourth at Perishable Theatre. Festival founder and Curator Peter Deffet presents new works of dance, theater, puppetry, music and mania from local and not-so-local artists.

Conceived at first as a venue for short plays, dances and musical sets, The Fledgling Festival has established itself as an important and illuminating step in the life of new performance works in the region. “In general, performing artists who are developing their own work find it very helpful to workshop in front of a live audience, and having a two-week run gives the performers an opportunity to develop the piece from performance to performance,” observes Curator Peter Deffet, himself a multi-disciplinary performance artist. “Many of the pieces in the Festival are in process of being developed into longer evening-length performances, so many artists find interesting what offshoots come from an individual piece through the festival.”

With its mission of connecting RI audiences to groundbreaking works of theatre, Perishable Theatre is proud to partner with Peter Deffet in the presentation of The Fledgling Festival. “The Fledgling Festival creates opportunities for established and emerging performers to truly take flight on the winds of their creativity,” notes Perishable Theatre Artistic Director Vanessa Gilbert.

This year’s offerings include work from the following artists:

Moira Brady is a performance artist who resides within AS220. Her last piece for Fledgling (Mike Eng’s Cat Bang) was an exploration of the mating rituals of feral cats in Providence. Look forward to her love of mayonnaise in Fledgling #5.

Rachel Teumim is a choreographer based in western MA. This will be her first time performing in the Fledgling Festival, although she is a close friend of the Fledgling Family.

Lise Brody is a choreographer based in Providence whose work has been seen throughout New England, most recently at The Yard on Martha’s Vineyard. This is Lise’s first presentation with The Fledgling Festival.

Jose Docen is a song writer, musician and actor currently based in RI. His work has been seen in New England and in NYC.

Melissa Bowler is an actor and comedian based in RI. She can be seen regularly with her tag team TITS, and as a member of Improv Jones as well as several other improve companies in RI.

Angela Conte, choreographer and performer, returns to the Fledgling stage after an appearance in last year’s Fledgling Festival. She is a student at RWU under Gary Shore and Melody Ruffin-Ward.

Nicole Maynard is a writer , performer and puppeteer based in RI. She has graced the Fledgling stage with The Adventures of Fat Nancy & Crisco, as well as with other comedies such as Tough Titty Said the Kitty.

Kevin Broccoli is a playwright and actor based in RI. His work has been seen on the Fledgling stage in the past. This year’s play presents the audience with a conundrum: to watch the kiss or not watch the kiss?

Don’t miss what Bill Rodriguez of The Providence Phoenix called “…a carnival of diversity and humor.”
