Celebrating Diversity 2009: 1st Annual State Multicultural Art Exhibit @ Atrium Gallery - Runs until September 25th

Completed in the Summer of 2008, the Endangered Peoples Project is comprised of eight portraits of indigenous people from around the world: Three from South America (Paraguay, Brazil, Peru), two from Africa (Sudan, Ethiopia), and three from Asia (Russia, India, Malaysia).

This is a small sampling of the indigenous tribal peoples whose survival is threatened often for many of the same reasons: Economic 'development', government indifference or inaction, armed conflicts, and disease. Each portrait is acrylic and ink on 20" x 20" x 3.5" canvas and is accompanied by a short written component detailing the peoples plight. Proceeds from the collection benefit Survival International.

Curated by Elena Calderon Patino

Participating Artists: Dan Butterworth, Jiyoung Chung, Cinzia Cittadino, Ana Flores, Nancy Gaucher-Thomas, Francisco Hernandez, Ciriaco Herrero, Betsy McLaughlin, Maria Napolitano, Clare Nesdall, Amy Jean Romero, Cynthia Ross-Meeks, Affandi Setiawan, Hiroko Shikashio, Andrew Sloan, Mark Taber, Brittanny Taylor, Sidney Tillett

Artists Reception: Thursday, September 17th - 6 to 9pm

Peter Lutz Invites You to Two Openings in Providence

Providence Art Windows Exhibit: "Material Obsession" -
September 17th to December 1st
Two Brothers Beauty Supply, Eddy and Westminster Street

This piece will be a large-scale installation featuring thousands of pieces of cut adhesive vinyl attached directly to the glass based on patterns of tree canopies. I’ve always believed that the storefront window acts like a mirror, as well as a display case, showing the viewer themselves as well as the product inside, allowing them to evaluate their self worth while being confronted by the object of their desire. Behind the vinyl is a layer of reflective mylar, which not only reflects the vinyl image, but also the surrounding view of the street and buildings and ambient light. As Providence citizens pass by they are presented with several sets of overlapping patterns and shifting perspectives.
Opening Reception:Thursday, September 17th- 5:30 to 7:30pm

Pixilerations at 5 Traverse Gallery
The second project is a multi-channel video I will be installing at 5 Traverse Gallery for the Pixilerations new media Festival. This piece will incorporate layering and multiplicity using simple techniques of shadow play, each screen will present a different view of the process.

Click here for a sample video.
Opening Reception: Thursday, September 24th - 6 to 8pm
For more information about upcoming projects from Peter Lutz, click here.

LIVE BAIT: TRUE STORIES FROM REAL PEOPLE

LIVE BAIT: TRUE STORIES FROM REAL PEOPLE

It’s all relative – a person connected to another by blood or marriage, an animal or plant related to another by common descent, a subordinate clause qualifying an expressed or implied antecedent. Relative is not absolute or independent; it is comparative, contingent, conditional. There’s relativity and relativism and, let us not forget, relations. Can you relate?

If you can, then come on down to LIVE BAIT and tell your story (if it is in any way, shape, or form connected to our October theme, “Relative”). Or just come and watch others share theirs. All you have to do is sign up at the door (come a little early, sign-up space is limited), and when it’s your time, we’ll call your name. It’s that easy. No notes, no rants, just tell your story like you’re telling your friends over a couple of drinks. There is a five-six minute time limit, please respect it.

Everyone is encouraged, performers and non-performers alike. Don’t miss this Rhode Island Monthly Best of RI winner for “Best Storytelling for Grown-ups,” Providence Phoenix Best of 2009 Editors’ Pick for “Best Excuse to Yammer On and On” and Motif Magazine Theatre Award winner for “Best Audience Participation Show.”

LIVE BAIT is hosted by Phil Goldman. With musical accompaniment and original “theme” song by Jerry Gregoire.

Friday, October 2th, 2009 at 10:00 pm.
$5, no reservations
At Perishable Theatre, 95 Empire Street, Providence, RI 02903

Waste Not Want Not: Senior Outreach Volunteers Needed

Senior Outreach Volunteers Needed:
Waste Not Want Not is beginning an outreach program for senior citizens interested in textile arts, and need some dedicated volunteers!

Waste Not Want Not will be hosting informal sewing/knitting classes at the Fox Point Senior Center once a week, similar to the Stitch and Bitch's we host in our space downtown. The program will begin as an informal social gathering for seniors to learn new skills, or simply utilize our machines for their own projects. This program could become an opportunity for seniors to work together on a larger group project, or make work specifically designed to show in our gallery. At the moment, this is a volunteer position, not a paying job, but we can provide financial assistance for gas money or bus fare.

WNWN is looking for one or two people who are:
- Skilled with sewing machines, hand stitching, and/or knitting
- Comfortable working with the elderly
- Able to commit to visiting the senior center once a week, in the early afternoon (Thursdays or Fridays are best)
- Reliable and punctual
- Willing and able to transport one or two sewing machines and and supplies from WNWN to the Fox Point Senior Center

Please email, wnwnprovidence@gmail.com if you are interested.
