ARTSMASH RI Review: Wicked at PPAC

By: Marianna Messina,
ARTSMASH RI

Suppose the "Wicked Witch of the West" got a bad rap in the Wizard of Oz. Suppose it was all just a smear campaign against one woman of conscience launched by an impotent potentate (the Wizard) in a regime marked by persecution. That's the major premise of Wicked the musical, storming Providence for a second sellout season at PPAC. Winnie Holzman's book for the musical (based on the eponymous novel by Gregory Maguire) offers promising sophistication for the musical genre as it flips the Oz tale and reinterprets everything from flying monkeys to tin man… Rather than good versus evil, Wicked portrays a war between two modes of living, the one a path of aspiration, strife, jealousy, and cultural incompatibility; the other, a "for the good of all" path each person follows according to her gifts.

Wicked at PPAC. Now through January 10th.

Review: Final Show in This Season's Afrosonic Music Series at the Black Rep

By: Marianne Messina, ARTSMASH RI

So how did this Black Repertory mashup between PBS' Low Water and BET's Chachi Carvalho go? Sort of like a wedding party – slow and smooth for the good meal, then breaking loose for the family fiesta. Short by a guitarist, Low Water was a three-piece surrounded by stage; Carvalho's nine-piece Eleventh Island Band was a stage takeover, crowding the stage with horn section, keys, drum kit, conga drums, guitar, bass, and DJ tables. And every instrument was going full tilt. Low Water comes on like a cottage by the lake, phased-guitar dreamy, horse-clop groovy, and Carvalho comes in like urban train wreck. Common to both bands are their stick-to-the-ribs melody lines. Leitera's vocals suck you into a song; his lyrics -- when you can pick them out -- smack your brain, and the fits-and-starts drum beats call you to attention. With Carvalho, you never know where the melody will show up. It could show up on bass as Chachi raps about a bad system. It could show up the next song on sax (as in "Un Perde Cheu"). In keeping with Afrosonic's reputation for mashing genres, cultures and age groups, these very different bands played together with
the full respect of the house.

AFROSONIC WITH ABICAH SOUL AT THE BLACK REP THIS FRIDAY DEC. 11TH DON'T MISS OUT!

SAVE THIS DATE... YOU DO NOT WANT TO MISS OUT!

Abicah Soul grew up in Chicago during the days of the Warehouse and Muzic Box, and his deejay sets and production—like those of friends Glenn Underground, Boo Williams, Paul Johnson, and Gene Hunt—are heavily influenced by the pioneering work of Frankie Knuckles and Ron Hardy. He began deejaying in 1983, when he was only 12 years old, and has been a staple in the Chi-town rave and club scene ever since, holding residencies at Smartbar, Club4, and Ohm and doing weekly radio gigs for WNUR 89.3 and prepartyradio.com.

As a producer, Abicah has landed releases on Classic, Jellybean, Nite Life Collective, Rush Hour, Wha? Roots, Seasons, and many other labels. An in-demand remixer, he has given tracks by Telepopmusik, Osunlade, Glenn Underground, Terry Hunter, Boddhi Satva, and many others the “Abicah” treatment. His signature soulful, deeply-rooted yet edgy afro-latin sound—evidenced by recent tracks such as “Musique de Ve” (Eargasmic)—is unique in dance music today and defies categorization. Imagine Joe Claussell collaborating with ¬me, or IsolÈe teaming up with Osunlade and you’re on the right track. His work has been compared to that of Jazzanova and Quentin Harris, and as a “DJ’s producer” he is one of the best-kept and most-cherished secrets in deep house. Indeed, a wide variety of deejays—from Brett Johnson and DJ Heather to Marques Wyatt, Blaze, and Gilles Peterson—have featured his tracks on their Mix CDs

Opening set by the AfroSonic Collective Djs

Live percussion by the AfroSonic Drummers.

Max Vernon on Live Block 12.10.09

Just thought I'd give a quick update about recent and upcoming installments of Live Block, the Brown Student and Community Radio show that hosts live bands in-studio every Thursday night from 9 to 10. Last week we had Mary Bee, who sang beautifully over some tight beats. You can check out her music here.

Next week Max Vernon will be performing. A songwriter from NYC, he plays piano and sings, and from his listed influences - "carnivals, dusty honky tonk pianos, vintage pornography, michel foucault, and booze" - it sounds like it's going to be quite the trip. Music here.

Hope you'll tune in to 88.1fm (WELH providence) or listen online.

You Can Live On Lemons, by William Walsh

Interrobang Magazine releases its second issue on Dec. 3, at Ada Books (717 Westminster St., Providence). The reading, drinking and general merriment begins at 8 p.m. (free of charge!). In anticipation, we're releasing a piece a day (or so) from the new volume until then.

You Can Live On Lemons

Arturo was so much happier before the revolution. And this is how he should be remembered, performing every night of the week at La Huchina, two shows, some nights three. Old regime, new regime. It didn’t matter to Arturo. His politics ran only as deep as the acne scars on Generalissimo’s brutal face. Arturo poked fun, mimicked, took potshots from the low stage. Then he would retreat and mock himself for three quarters of an hour. His lack of height. His wide ass. His crooked teeth. Arturo flopped onto the stage and pulled hard at the fine hair on his temples, wiped the glossy sweat from his bald pate.

We don’t need another revolution, he’d say. The old one still smarts.

Draw it mild, his agent counsels without disagreeing. You want to be a captive performer in buggerer’s bay?

Fascism can be funny. But you have to tiptoe. Arturo makes a joke about the waterboarding—pretending to confuse the term with wakeboarding. Tiptoe.Tiptoe.
