Spring Comes Early at BSR

It might still be frigid and there may be snow on the sidewalk outside, but here in the BSR studios, spring is here. We're just about done with the first week of the spring season, and from what I've heard so far, it's gonna be a good one. Tune in on WELH 88.1FM between 9PM and 3AM, or stream our webcast on bsrlive.com anytime. Check out our website for the schedule, or scroll down to hear more and save a copy of the schedule to your computer to print out.

Between returning favorites and new ideas, there's something for everyone! For seasonally appropriate fare, try out A Veritable Smorgasbord of Scandinavian tunes Saturday at 7pm. Friday night on WELH stays strong, starting with mainstays Joanne's Theory of a Radio Show and Ampersand Theater, followed by the up-and-coming Archaeology of Crates. And you can once again keep your night bouncing with James Alderwood's late night Kitchen, coming on at midnight. Tuesday nights continue to be the place to be for the latest hip-hop hits, mixed live in studio, featuring DJs Tek, Lefty, Therion, and King Ecko.

And the spring marks the rebirth of Off the Beat, our (now biweekly) news show featuring all the news and views from Providence that you may not have heard. Off the Beat shares the 9PM Monday slot with our resident features program, The Radio Show.

Brown Student & Community Radio is an entirely volunteer run station, and is always looking for new members to help us make great radio. Not only is it a fun time, but it's a great experience. If making radio sounds awesome to you, contact us at volunteers@bsrlive.com to get involved!

ARTSMASH Review: Elemental Theatre

Review of Elemental Collective
By Marianne Messina

Elemental Theatre Collective's three-play program entitled The Father, the Son and The Holy Go.Go specializes in well-rounded plots woven together by echoing themes. Making fluid transitions between "chillin'" and acting, the actors keep the program rolling through the interstices with audience singalongs accompanied on guitar by the Collective's Dave Rabinow and D'Arcy Dersham. The first half of the program presents two flash plays about couples, The Cabin (by George Brandt) and RedPop (by Alexander Platt), and most striking about these plays is their tight development. Even as each includes echoes from the other in its dialogue – for example, one partner in each couple is in awe of the trees; the other partner, not so much -- the plays accelerate very consistently toward a kind of punch line. Easily subtitled "The Secret Life of Women," both plays take place at the life-changing crossroads of early pregnancy -- which apparently comes in a ménage-a-trios package and calls for an exorcism of secrets. For these couples, at least, the moment is filled with relationship turmoil, doubts, and ghosts from the past.

ABOUT IAN:
Armed with a passion for the arts, Ian Friday is on a creative mission.
This New Yorker has been seen on stage and film and has performed throughout NYC as a poet.

In 1994 he founded a nonprofit arts organization called the Tea Party which provided a platform for upcoming and established artists such as Erykah Badu, Mos Def, Talib Kweli, Saundra St. Victor, Vernon Reid, Corey Glover, Saul Williams, The Antibalas and the Last Poets. The Tea Party also featured one of the hottest and well respected open mics in NYC as well as a party with Ian at the deejay helm.

Ian has spread his wings into the arena of music. He has worked closely with Blaze, remixing their song "We Are One" on King Street Records and produced their first mixed cd, "The Found Love Mix CD" on West End Records. His first release on West End Records entitled "The Island Life EP" features the now classic, "Carib's Leap".

Ian started Tea Party Music in 2006 to present quality global soul music. The first release, "Life Starts Today" (Byron Moore) has
received astonishing support from all the major soulful deejays.
This tune has become a staple in the sets played by the likes of Timmy Regisford, Louie Vega, Osunlade, Danny Krivit, Joe Clausell and Kevin Hedge, to name a few. The second release "Everything" (Ian Friday featuring Erro) has been met with similiar enthusiasm. The current release, "Theorema Del Faya"(Tea Party Vocal) - Anto Vitale has been heralded as one of the hits of the 2007 Winter Music Conference and can also be heard on "Lust: Art & Soul", a cd compiled by Louie Vega. With forthcoming productions featuring Manchildblack, Corey Glover, Kelli Sae and Shelley Nicole, Tea Party Music has quickly become a record label to be reckoned with. In the fall of 2006, Ian was rewarded with the Choice Award for "Best Emerging Talent" .

With good music abound, the deejay side of Ian Friday has been heard for years at major clubs in NYC and around the world. He has played several times at Louie Vega and Kevin Hedge's wildly popular weekly party, "Roots" at Club Cielo. He has also done several guest spots at Timmy Regisford's legendary "Shelter" party. He has a monthly residency at The Sapphire Lounge doing an event called "Libation".
This party has featured many visual artists msucians and guest deejays.
Out in the world Ian has played at Canvas, Herbal and AKAin London, Djoon in Paris, Billionaire Club in Italy, Yellow in Tokyo, Grand Cafe in Osaka to name just a few.

"The universality of art is the glue that binds the people of the world together." Ian Friday continues to do his part in building and broadening family and community by his art.

ARTSMASHRI Review of 4:48 Psychosis at the Gamm Theatre

Review of 4:48 Psychosis
By Marianne Messina

Now at the Gamm Theatre, thru February 7, 2010

The Gamm Theatre production of Sarah Kane's play 4:48 Psychosis, makes clinical depression an in-your-face affair. In a tensile, mercurial performance by Casey Seymour Kim, "the Woman" in 4:48 Psychosis wakes every day at this same early morning hour in a state of dysphoria. A powerful aspect of the Gamm production is the way it deliberately inculpates the audience. Kim has no qualms about piercing the fourth wall, directing comments at her viewers. She singles out individuals in the crowd saying things like, "I beg you to save me!" But just as quickly, she's pointing and saying, "fuck you!" and "fuck you!" Because we aren't wired to roll so easily with contradiction, this production hurls a question at us, not so much how do we understand madness but how do we deal with it. Brought under the filtered scrutiny of the depressed Woman, the audience is thrown into parallel with the Woman's therapist, "Doctor" (Tom Gleadow). We observe, we sympathize, we keep our infuriating distance. It helps that the Gamm's 3-sided seating leaves us facing each other. As the Woman pleads an anguished "see me" and "no one touches me," members of the 3-sided audience can witness each other in the same state of passive (if not intense) observation as the Doctor, who infuriates the woman with his need to "cover his ass." This wonderful staging makes for skin bristling theater…

ARTSMASH RI Review: "Hues and Views" at the Warwick Museum

Review: "Hues and Views" at the Warwick Art Museum

By: Bob Dilworth, fine art curator, Artsmash RI

Being back at the Warwick museum for a January 8th opening of this two-person exhibition was much like seeing an old friend after many years of absence…

Greatly influenced by works by Wayne Thiebaud, Pierre Bonnard, and Antonio Lopez Garcia, the first artist on display (now through January 30) sees her paintings as a way of telling her story. Margaret Owen's pieces are small, no more than ten inches in height or width, but rich, succulent cakes, oranges, apples, and pomegranates convey a captivating tale of social easiness and charm. She asked herself many times, “Why paint oranges over and over?” The answer, “Because it’s my story of oranges, of life’s reflections, of interpreting how I feel, of how I see the world.” She has Thiebaud’s intoxicating brightness, his sunny California blindness. She has also captured Bonnard’s, and I might add Cezanne’s, passion for form and shadow. However, it’s harder to see the grit and rawness of Garcia’s influence. His no-holds-barred realism, his portraits, landscapes, and figures occupy a murkier world. But perhaps what she was referring to in our conversation about narrative had more to do with where she is going in her painting rather than where she is. If this is the case then Garcia is an exciting open door.
