Artsmash RI Review: Edward II at RIC

ARTSMASH RI Review
By: Marianna Messina

Rhode Island College mounts a bold Edward II

Directed by Frank Toti

With Christopher Marlowe's complex history play Edward II, one always has to ask, what brings this 14th century king so low that he would be deposed and silently executed? … Marlowe's Edward is clearly "amorous" towards his minion Gaveston, promoting the man far beyond his station. But Marlowe so compresses the historical Edward's 20-year descent that we are urged to look for character flaws, even beyond this love and favoritism for a low-born Frenchman. Our search for answers demands a lot from the actor playing Edward. Preceded in the role of Edward II by great English actors the likes of Derek Jacobi and Steven Waddington, Rhode Island College's Jeff Church not only holds his own, but owns this character. Church's lucid handling of Marlowe's poetic language is matched by his nuanced expressiveness. He gives us petulance streaked with irony. His flourishes show Edward's gleeful relish of tactical victories (however few). We can't help but like and believe in this Edward. In a scene where Edward learns of his beloved Gaveston's death, Church's evocative physicality throws light on the key questions of the play. He staggers, his hands curling inward like claws as if overruled by some irreconcilable force. And then his whole body folds into a helpless, fetal ball that marks his inner retreat. Such vulnerability could surely lead a king to a great fall.

Live Bait: True Stories From Real People

Things don’t always turn out the way we would like. There are things we might have done differently, things we should have said, things we shouldn’t have said. But what if you had a second chance? A do-over? What would you do differently? Or maybe you did have a second chance. What did you do? Did it work? You want to talk about it?

If you have a story that is in any way, shape, or form connected to our March theme, “Second Chances,” then come on down to LIVE BAIT and tell it. Or just come and watch others share theirs. All you have to do is sign up at the door and if we pick your name out of our hat, come up and tell your story. It’s that easy.

ARTSMASH RI Review: "Twelfth Night" at Trinity Rep

ARTSMASH RI Review:
"Twelfth Night" at Trinity Rep
by Marianna Messina

"...At Trinity Rep, the actors can obviously handle Shakespearean language on auto-pilot, giving them leave to add spice. As the bawdy, drunken Sir Toby, Fred Sullivan adds physicality and notches up the nose-thumb as the kinsman who won't go away. Annie Worden's Olivia pursues Cesario with a randy coquettishness, once her wardrobe evolves from widow's black to saucy red velvet and satin (elegance by costume designer William Lane). Joe Wilson, Jr., tinges the lovelorn Orsino with melodrama. And Brian McEleney (both acting and directing) has perfected Malvolio -- pinched face, upright posture and faux voce blueblood. ..."

ARTSMASH RI Review: Festival's Ballet's "Up Close on Hope"

ARTSMASH RI
Review of Festival Ballet's "Up Close on Hope"
by Marianna Messina

Showing February 13, 27 & 28

Besides being ambitious and diverse, Modern and Classical, Festival Ballet's program of 8 dances, "Up Close on Hope," will do you like a rich meal packed into a lunch break. With five world premieres, rugged calisthenics ranging from classical grand jetes to modern back lifts, and all tucked into the you-can-hear-them-breathe intimacy of the Festival Ballet space -- each dance in this program should be seen twice and savored in a silence before applause. In the striking modern dance Beyond Words set to whimsical music by Radiohead (Tess Bernard choreography), a couple enters: Kristina D'Onofrio lifted by and hugging into Roger Fonnegra. And then D'Onofrio spills onto the floor in what seems like a disgorgement of impulses. Her moves describe both a pushing out from and a cocooning into the relationship. Fonnegra's on his knees looking dismayed; D'Onofrio's circling him, gaping, as side lighting accents them with highlights and outlines them in shadow (Benn Scheff, lighting). In one striking lift, D'Onofrio hooks her knee around Fonnegra's support arm. The piece complements a piece in the program's second half, a pas de deux from Antony Tudor's The Leaves Are Fading. In this pas de deux, the relationship is entirely supportive. Mark Harootian is there to catch Lauren Kennedy's backward falls and ground her flights of abandon.

Friday, February 5th at 10pm. All seats $5
At Perishable Theatre, 95 Empire Street, Providence, RI 02903

These are tough times. For some of us, maybe most, times have always been tough. We have to be physically tough, mentally tough, and emotionally tough just to get through our day. Sometimes we’re tough on ourselves, sometimes on the ones we love. But how tough is too tough? How tough is Tough Enough?

If you have a story that is in any way, shape, or form connected to our February theme, “Tough Enough,” then come on down to LIVE BAIT and tell it. Or just come and watch others share theirs. All you have to do is sign up at the door and if we pick your name out of our hat, come up and tell your story. It’s that easy. No notes, no rants, just tell your story like you’re telling your friends over a couple of drinks. There is a five-six minute time limit; please respect it or we might get tough.

Everyone is encouraged, performers and non-performers alike.
