ARTSMASH RI Review of Glass Menagerie @ The Gamm Theatre - Runs until Sunday, April 4th

ARTSMASH RI Review: Glass Menagerie, The Gamm Theatre

By: Marianne Messina, ARTSMASH RI

Even for someone who's seen Tennessee Williams' play, The Glass Menagerie many times, the Gamm Theatre's current production, directed by Fred Sullivan, is riveting. For one thing, it's hard to take your ears off Wendy Overly as Amanda, the former Southern belle and matriarch of Williams' fatherless, loosely autobiographical family… Radiating pent-up energy, Overly's Amanda is quite touchy-feely. The addition of this dimension to the micro-managing mother dabs humor in places that other productions find somber. Amanda combs or fusses with her son Tom's hair; she fillips him on the head; she gives him a hug that includes rubbing his chest and squeezing his pecs. Within seconds, she is able to shift from berating Tom (Marc Dante Mancini) for selfishness to fussing over him, "where's your earmuffs?" to corralling him in a choke-hold with a scarf. For his part, Mancini's Tom matches Amanda's micromanagement with an assortment of blighted facial expressions, adding humor all the more.

LIVE BAIT: TRUE STORIES FROM REAL PEOPLE @ Perishable Theatre - Friday, April 2nd

LIVE BAIT: TRUE STORIES FROM REAL PEOPLE
Friday, April 2nd at 10pm. All seats $5
At Perishable Theatre, 95 Empire Street, Providence, RI 02903

When Live Bait says “True Stories from Real People,” we aren’t kidding
about the *REAL *part. Over the last year and a half, we’ve heard it
all: stories of drug addiction, incarceration, suicide, divorce and
more. But it hasn’t been all dire, we even had, at our most recent
show, right on stage, a marriage proposal! The good news was, she
accepted, after a potentially embarrassingly long dramatic pause. So
now, drunk with success, Live Bait has decided to ramp it up a notch
with our April theme, *“THIS S**T JUST GOT REAL!”*

If you have a story that is in any way, shape, or form connected to
our theme, then come on down and tell it. Or just come and watch others
share theirs. All you have to do is sign up at the door and if we pick
your name out of our hat, come up and tell your story. It’s that easy.
No notes, no rants, just tell your story like you’re telling your
friends over a couple of drinks. There is a six minute time limit;
please respect it or, dare we say it, s**t really will get real.

Blood From a Turnip Late Night Puppet Salon

This month:

*Recently relocated to Providence, Rachel Jendrzejewski and Theo Goodell make their Blood From a Turnip (BFaT) premiere. Rachel and Theo, often writing for humans performers, will present a brand new piece written just for this night, which means written just for you (but only if you are one of the people at the show).

* Providence’s newest puppet company, Bonky Dolls, will perform a piece created by David Higgins and Amanda Weir that will take the audience on a journey through time to the oppressively hot and humid days of summer in Providence, which sounds great when it’s really winter in Providence.

*Boston’s Evan O’Television, a familiar face to BFaT regulars will attempt to juggle two things this show. He will not only co-host, he will entertain with his latest incarnation of video puppetry.

*Plus, the unique puppet magic of our special secret guest.

Moe Methot will provide the charming and personable musical interludes for the evening. When asked, Moe, formerly of Providence electronic music pioneers, Stained Rug Theory, responded “I’d love to do it!” He’s happy. We’re happy. Come down. See why everyone’s happy. You’ll be happy. Yay.

Since Co-founder Vanessa Gilbert started Blood from a Turnip in February of 1997, BFaT, as the salon is affectionately called, has offered professional puppeteers and those new to the art form an opportunity to present big stories, in miniature. Vanessa has recently added David Higgins, Nicole LeDuc, and Boston-based, electronic puppeteer Evan O’Television, as BFaT continues to redefine itself, but refuses to grow up.
What- Blood from a Turnip, RI’s ONLY late night puppet salon.

Wall Street and Serial Killers

On a recent episode of the Daily Show, Jon Stewart interviewed Scott Patterson, the journalist who wrote The Quants: How a New Breed of Math Wizards Conquered Wall Street and Nearly Destroyed It. And I realized: we have a strange, sick fascination with supposedly hyper-intelligent Wall Street whiz-kids.

Ever since the Enron debacle and the film "The Smartest Guys in the Room," we've been trying to understand these shadowy, yet highly successful economics and mathematicians who pull the strings of our incomprehensible financial system. We're disgusted by their greed and hubris, but-- like a horrible train wreck-- we can't look away. And even though time and time again they've run our economy into the dirt, they still manage to convince us that, really, they've got everything under control. No need for regulation here. (There's a great episode of Frontline called The Warning about how economists from the derivatives trading market managed to convince Congress of just that. And then what happened? I think the 9.7% employment rate should answer that question.)

It reminds me of our equally bizarre fascination with serial killers. They're horrifying and terrible-- but we need to know more. How could someone so smart and so clever, well, be so f***ed up? In the same way that serial killers manage to control our sense of safety and security, the Wall Street "quants" have a disturbing amount of control over the economy. And, in the same way that serial killers eventually get cocky and then get caught, the Wall Street numbers men eventually miscalculate up one too many models and grind the economy to a standstill. And, to make it even more fascinating, most of us have no idea how these math wizards do it.

It's absolutely important for us to understand how these individuals use economic models, and where their mathematical methodologies come up short. But we need to stop treating these individuals like geniuses and wunderkinder, because that makes us more likely to accept their theoretical models unquestioningly. And we don't need another economic crisis anytime soon.
