Live Bait @ Perishable Theatre - Friday, May 7th

Live Bait @ Perishable Theatre

Clutter is everywhere: on our desks, in our cars and in our basements (well, with the recent flooding, that clutter is probably now cluttering our front lawns). There’s clutter in the air, clutter on the airwaves, clutter on the Internet and, lest we forget, the ever-present, ever-distracting MENTAL CLUTTER. What is your clutter? Where is your clutter? Do you add to the clutter? Or are you cutting it down?

If you have a story that is in any way, shape, or form connected to our theme, “*Clutter*,” then come on down and tell it. Or just come and watch others share theirs. All you have to do is sign up at the door and if we pick your name out of our fishbowl, come up and tell your story. It’s that easy. No notes, no rants, just tell your story like you’re telling your friends over a couple of drinks. There is a six minute time limit; please respect it.

HEDWIG AND THE ANGRY INCH

Providence, RI: Perishable Theatre, Rhode Island’s Research and Development Theatre.

Perishable Theatre’s black box transforms into a rock club for the final show of the 2009-2010 musical season. ArtsmashRI Review: Newport Art Museum by Marianne Messina

Review: Artist Reception: Newport Art Museum
By Marianne Messina, ArtsmashRI

The Newport Art Museum Spring Exhibit Opens

As part of "There and Not There: Rust Portraits by Esther Solondz" (at Newport Art Museum through June 6th), the rust portraits formed rows and columns over the walls of a high, spacious hall, and they gazed out over the glow of hard wood floors. In a more intimate, carpeted room at the Newport Art Museum opening, Rene Stawicki's "Airborn: Ovid's Avian Changes" (at the museum through May 23) wound around the walls in a rectilinear progression of panels, each panel accompanied by the Ovidian tale that inspired it. The small room was full of color and fantasy; the large room was a march of dichromatic ghosts…. What emerged among viewers was a kind of consensus about the eeriness sensed in the rust portraits' presence. And they do emanate presence. Someone in our Artsmash clutch said as we were leaving, "I have to say goodbye to Mrs. Finch," calling a Solondz portrait by name. It's easy to become familiar with them, to personalize them, and to think of them as friends that you greet and say goodbye to. And ironically, this ease seems to come from the non-photographic, un-identifiable aspects of the images.

For more on the Newport Art Museum Spring Exhibit visit ArtsmashRI.

ARTSMASH RI Review: The Duchess of Malfi, A Trinity/Brown Production

Review: The Duchess of Malfi, a Trinity/Brown production
By: Marianne Messina, ARTSMASH RI

"In John Webster's 17th century play, the Duchess of Malfi, the Duchess is a wealthy young widow forbidden to remarry by her brothers, Duke Ferdinand and "the Cardinal." The current Trinity/Brown production of the Duchess of Malfi is a gruff, lusty production. Adapted and directed by Brown Graduate student Kristan Seemel, it boldly clarifies Ferdinand's lust for his sister in a gropey scene between them, just after Ferdinand (Terrell Donnell Sledge) has learned that the Duchess (Madeleine Lambert) disobeyed his orders, secretly married and had a child. In Malfi, it seems, the more masks you peel away, the uglier things get. Seemel's use of masks -- besides making us wonder which is more base, the animal or the human -- works to create a strong blended tone. In an opening scene, the ensemble wears the masks to perform a wooden, stilted dance. The effect is both humorous and ominous, a tonal balance Seemel has managed to maintain throughout the show. In an eerie moment, the executioners set upon the Duchess wearing canine masks with piercing yellow eyes. Their surreal movements somewhere between swaying and twitching, they thrum the air to a predatory pulse with black-gloved fingers. This is a powerful scene…"
