2010 Barplays Festival - Runs until June 27th

The BarPlays Festival: plays set in bars placed in bars hits Providence the last two weeks in June and provides audiences (and casts) a chance to avoid that slog between the theater and the bar after the show. Over a dozen plays and other short performance pieces are on tap, all of which are set in bars. Some have even been written not just for the festival, but for specific bars involved. Participating venues include Trinity Brewhouse, Red Fez, Everyman Bistro, Wild Colonial, E &O Tap, Abe’s, AS220 and Nick-a-Nee’s.
Even greater than the variety of venues is the variety of plays, all of which stay under the half hour mark. Some will grip you harder than you will grip your glass as you sit mesmerized by the drama not in front of you on some stage, but right next to you. Some will be loud and open enough to call for another round without missing a beat. Some plays will be over before you finish your drink. The program for most nights consists of a longer one-act play paired with a couple of shorter pieces. There will also a variety of half time entertainment to give everyone a chance to get another round.

Why Is the New York Times Afraid of Computers?
The New York Times published two articles recently about the dangers of our modern, “plugged in” lifestyle. The articles go a little something like this:
6 June 2010: Computers will destroy your brain.
9 June 2010: Computers will destroy your family.
The argument of both articles is the same: our constant access to technology through laptops and mobile phones is eroding our ability to focus and engage with people around us. It’s certainly not a new criticism (…although I tend to side with commentators who point to the ways in which the “wired life” is actually enhancing the human mind, revolutionizing education and communication. But that’s just me.)
My point here is that the NYT articles, and stories like them, remind me a bit of scary computer stories. Computers and technology are represented as a pervasive, menacing force. The authors don’t go so far as to allot independence intelligence to this new technology, but for the sake of spinning a compelling narrative, they have a tendency to anthropomorphize the Internet. One telling quotes: “The technology is rewiring our brains.” Note that the technology, not people, are given agency!
Another common thread is the idea that we are becoming one with our technology. To me, this could be an exciting prospect…but again, in these stories, this merging process is described as threatening. Says one parent about her son: “Technology is part of the fabric of who he is.” Again, there’s a scary computer theme here. As we begin to merge ourselves with our computers, our intelligences become indistinguishable and we cede control over our technology. Eek!
So according to the New York Times, we’re presented with a choice between this:
or Luddism. But really, I don't think we have to choose.

ARTSMASH RI Review: The Belle of Amherst at 2nd Story Theatre

Review of The Belle of Amherst
By Marianne Messina, ARTSMASH RI
2nd Story Theater, through June 27
| With its spindle-backed juror chairs, its pew-like seating, its high ceiling and simple design, the Bristol Statehouse, built in 1816, feels so right for 2nd Story Theatre's production of The Belle of Amherst. The world painstakingly created by scenic artist Candis Dixon and director Pat Hegnauer drops us into the 1800s to experience the Amherst poet, Emily Dickinson, in her time and context. To project the forcefulness of Dickinson's personality in the vast space of this courtroom is no small feat, but actress Christin Goff uses the space so fully and naturally that we don't want to miss a word of her juicy confidences. As Emily takes us through stories about the way she taunted her Shakespeare advisor as a girl or how crushed she was when editor Thomas Higginson rejected her poetry, she amuses and charms. Up the stairs, across the aisle, back in through the gateways, she singles out audience members asking rhetorical questions; she passes around actual plates of "black cake"; she hands out poems. At one point she addresses a smiling viewer, "I see you agree with me," and the viewer nods, laughing. By the end of the play, after Emily has chatted with us about her life, her loves, her passion for the heartbeat of nature, we are left with a sense that Dickinson's teeming life brims on. This is probably what playwright William Luce had in mind when he wrote the play's last two words. For Goff's buoyant "I'm here!" clearly pairs the affirmation in Emily's way of living life with the life-affirming aspects of her poetry. If you've seen other "Belles," including Julie Harris in the film version, you will still want to see this one -- it's an impressive take on a beloved and thought-provoking figure.
