Perishable Theatre’s
15th International Women’s Playwriting Festival Tackles Provocative Themes
Providence-Launching Perishable Theatre’s 2010-2011 Season: It’s Women’s Work!! is the 15th International Women’s Playwriting Festival. This year’s events include three world premiere one-act plays by some of the nation’s most exciting women writers. Their work tackles such challenging themes as sexual violence in the military, teenage sexuality, and the quest to find meaning in a meaningless job. This year’s winning plays are:
This is How Laura Jacqmin, from Chicago, Illinois is an award-winning playwright whose work has been seen at Steppenwolf Theatre and the Goodman Theatre. She is the winner of the 2008 Wendy Wasserstein Prize. This is How follows Eli as he faces his first sexual encounter in a high school stairwell. Things take a dramatic and haunting turn when a grim piece of Eli’s past emerges.
The Golden Lasso Kit Idaszak is an emerging playwright whose work was recently seen at Chicago’s Collaboraction Theatre Company and Chicago Dramatists. She was also formerly the Literary Associate at Trinity Repertory Company. Her one-act play The Golden Lasso takes place at an American military base in the Middle East. It takes an unblinking look at the relationship between violence and sex in military war zones.
Swinging’ with Petula Mary F. Unser, a former Women’s Playwriting Festival winner, is based in Los Angeles. Her work has recently been seen at Ensemble Studio Theatre in L.A. Her play, Swingin’ with Petula follows Julie 1, Julie 2, and Titania as they struggle to survive the drudgery of the work that finances what they really want to do with their lives.
Founded with the sole mission of providing women playwrights the opportunity to develop and produce their new work with a professional team of artists, Perishable’s International Women’s Playwriting Festival now enjoys national visibility. The festival receives hundreds of submissions from around the world and has – for fifteen seasons – connected Rhode Island audiences with some of the most dynamic and cutting-edge women writing for the theatre today. A centerpiece of Perishable programming, Women’s Playwriting Festival alums include such award-winning writers as Alice Tuan, Carson Kreitzer, and Caridad Svich.
In addition to the world premieres of the winning plays, Perishable’s Women’s Playwriting Festival will also include staged readings by local women playwrights and late-night cabaret performances by Perishable’s Resident Artists.
All festival events take place at Perishable Theatre, 95 Empire Street, Downtown Providence for full festival details please visit www.perishable.org.
